We visited the worksite today to review the progress as we prepare for Memorial Day 2021.  There were stones stacked and scattered by the temporary pathway as we approached the under construction flagpole plaza.  “Awesome..” was the word I thought, as I got closer to the stonemasons of Custom Stone NC of Durham.

The cleared area looks a little rough as they play “beat the clock,” but we knew what they have done and we were pleased.  There is a shaft in the center that goes down five feet and is encased on concrete.  It is ready for the 40′ permanent flagpole.  Blue lines formed an imaginary pentagon, but not for long.  Next week the plaza is raised with fill stone and a bed will form as concrete fills the double-blue marker lines.  “We only have to worry about wet weather as we continue work,” the project manager shared, “but we are hopeful.”

This writer walked around and watched the stonemasons hard at work and captured a few pictures to tease you.  Click here to view them all.

We are so proud of the accomplishments so far.  Lots of work went into the dreaming, planning, decision-making, design work, and fundraising to get this far.  It felt good to see the site take shape.  We are extremely grateful for the many donors who donated resources, talents, shared our story, and generously gave to make Phases I and II possible.  You, too, can become a part of this formidable project and can honor the veterans of Orange County by making a tax-deductible gift to the Orange County Veterans Memorial.  Click here to learn more.

Our engraved pavers purchased by some are not in the county and safely awaiting installation.  The contractor obtained matching pavers to pave the plaza area.  That forms the pattern and our pavers are positioned artfully to encircle the flagpole.  You still have time to order a paver for a  family member, friend, distant or close relative, or a person you served with.

And, consider this.  Historic Orange County (1752) was much, much larger than it is today.  In fact, it ceded land to give birth to ten other now neighboring counties.  So, don’t feel you can’t participate because you do not now live in Orange County, North Carolina.  If you live nearby, you are part of historic Orange County and we are celebrating all veterans who served our Country since colonial times. Even if you moved way across country to “the Coast,” we have room for your memories and space for a personalize paver.  It will be a “forever gift” that you can visit when you move back to Carolina.

Oh, not to forget our hometown University, Carolina,  thousands of servicemen and women have made Chapel Hill their temporary home for four or more years.  There is room to honor them, too.   Take a look at the graphic below and you can see it’s gonna be big enough and we have not even  started to map out other paved areas and memorial zones.
