The American Legion of Chapel Hill announced that they are gearing up for a project that members have taken the lead on for more than 20 years. It is the long-established project of seeing that every grave at the Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery is visited and veterans’ graves are identified and decorated with our National Ensign. It starts with veterans and the community assembling at the cemetery on Saturday, May 27th at about 07:15 a.m. to receive instructions and flags.

Many of the flags will go on graves of the Post’s former leaders  and hundreds of other veterans. There are many heroes there including a Tuskegee Airman, veterans from World War I and II, Korea, Vietnam, and  recent conflicts. They are never forgotten as the veterans stand proud, read their name, place a flag, say their name out loud and clear, and salute.

A memorial ceremony is held at 08:00 a.m.

Traditionally, many of the assembled veterans gather for a no host breakfast at the nearby Bob Evans Restaurant. This is an emotional journey that kicks off veterans’ activities in and around Chapel Hill and at the American Legion Post. If you are interested in the flag placement, you are welcome. Yes, you can take your family, as many families join in and some have returned year after year. There are over 500 flags placed. It is a great teaching moment for children of all ages. The event is often covered by local news media. You may be photographed or interviewed, so please be yourself. It makes for a better picture.
