You have been waiting for news on “How are we doing?” and Memorial Day 2021. Keep visiting the site and we will soon flood you with great news.
For “teaser,” Phase II is nearing completion. Thanks to the many donors, matching funds, foundations, and support from Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Orange County, we raised enough to move past temporary paths and a flagpole. That’s right, construction is on going.
With the Seymour Center’s expansion and road realignment you may not have gotten to the top of the hill. Phase II has footings in and stone mason’s building the core areas of the Orange County Veterans Memorial. Here are a few pictures.
We are assured that, absent a bout of heavy, continuous, rain, most of the work will be done. That includes the laying of our first set memorial pavers! Sorry, you can not yet venture around the actual construction site, but you are welcome to drive up to the Southern Human Services Center, park in the upper parking area, and walk up to the Memorial’s curb and look over the stone masons hard at work.
Join us on Memorial Day for the unveiling and raising of the flag on our new, permanent flagpole in the Flagpole Plaza. Pavers will be placed at the beginning of the plaza entrance and continue to the right. There is plenty of room for you to place your personal memorial paver to recognize family, parents, friends, who have served. And, if you don’t want to purchase a paver, you can send us a check or we will take cash on Memorial Day at the ceremony.
Want to write us a large or small donor check? You can send it to us at our mailbox in Hillsborough. Send it to: Orange County Veterans Memorial, Incorporated, 169 Boone Square St, #223, Hillsborough, NC 27278. We are officially recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) Veterans Charity. Your donations are tax deductible. If you are looking to make a donation of stock, securities, or IRA Distribution, we can assist you through your bank and our financial agents at Edward Jones. Just contact us and we will assist you. Ask your employer about matching donations, we are a 501(c)(3).
Lastly, we are streamlining operations and making some things similar to do. We will soon relegate our original website to a historical site for those of you who have requested continued access to stories and such. Next, and hopefully before Memorial Day, we are going to make Paver Ordering available online. This will let you select and design your memorial paver online and view it as a finished product. Then you can approve it and pay for it all at the same time. Wait, it does get better. Your online order will be assigned a location around the flagpole. You will be able to look it up on this website and at our Phase III entrance kiosk. Space is limited around the flagpole. Early ordering is suggested. Watch for the Online Paver Order Site to go online, then order.
If you visit the memorial, you will surely want to be a part of this great project. It has always been a project funded by the citizens of Orange County and that includes historic Orange County–1752. Did you realize that the original county begat ten other counties? But, that’s another story.
