Other Memorials

Our neighboring towns and some larger cities already have significant Veterans Memorials. Here are some examples:

The Garner Veterans Memorial

The Garner Veterans Memorial is in Garner, NC, at Lake Benson. It is located at the entrance to a large park that is frequented by many. The memorial consists of multiple obelisks that represent the many periods of conflict Garner citizens participated in. The site is well lit at night time and offers a tranquil setting for reflection.  Learn more.

Mebane Veterans Garden

Mebane repurposed a downtown service station site for use as a Veterans Garden. It is located next to the police station on US 70 at 5th. It was a community project that resulted in a public park with walkways, gardens, flags and a memorial stone waterfall. The park walkways and sidewalks contain pavers with the names of local citizens and their ancestors. Pavers can be purchased and dedicated to any serviceman, living or dead, local or from a far off town. Learn more.

NC National Guard

This memorial is approved and they are now working on raising the funding.  The design for the memorial had to accomplish two things: ….honor the various conflicts in NCNG history in a general fashion”, and “….honor NCNG soldiers that died in Iraq or Afghanistan in a specific way.”

NC Veterans Park

The Veterans Memorial in Fayetteville, NC, is located at the North Carolina Veterans Park. It welcomes and provides a tribute to all veterans of North Carolina. This memorial is in a park setting with many trees and walkways.  It has many of the attributes of the memorial proposed for Chapel Hill. The memorial represents veterans from each of the North Carolina counties. Each county selected a veteran to represent it and to have their hands represented by a bronze replica.

Siler City Memorial

Siler City is a small town on US 64.  It may be a small town, but not in heart. Their veterans memorial is absolutely awesome. The official name for the memorial is the West Chatham Veterans Memorial. Learn more about the memorial by visiting the West Chatham County Historical Society web page for the history. The memorial was dedicated on May, 14, 2006, by the West Chatham Veterans Memorial Committee. The citizens chose a park setting near the town recreation park and pool. It is on a well traveled road and sits on a corner. You can not miss it! Heading south through Siler City you will see the familiar brown park signs pointing the way to the memorial. The names of local veterans are placed on the pillars in random order.  This insures that there is room to add names for future conflicts. It now holds over 600 names and there is room for about 800. Why not add this memorial to your points of interest on the way to the North Carolina Zoo? Let your children visit the memorial and sit awhile. You can explain to them the meanings of the abbreviations (there is a legend) next to each veterans name. Be not afraid or hesitant to share our history with our youth. They are our future.

The Carolina Field of Honor

The Carolina Field of Honor is located in Kernersville, North Carolina.  It was built and is operated by The War Memorial Foundation. This memorial is simply beyond description. The War Memorial Foundation says, “… the Carolina Field of Honor, Triad Park is a joint venture of Forsyth and Guilford Counties. A total of 426 acres have been bought by the counties as a regional centerpiece park which has nature based park facilities nestled in the woods and meadows. The park will be an ongoing project for many years, developing in phases with facilities and opportunities to meet the needs of all levels of recreation and leisure – a park for everyone! Visit the memorial’s website to learn more and to explore this outstanding tribute to our military  service men and women.  Click here.

Yanceyville

The Yanceyville Memorial is located at the Caswell County Courthouse. The Veteran’s Walk consists of engraved pavers that memorialize the service of a Caswell County veterans. Stones continue to be added. The local veterans are very active in civic affairs and service to their community.  Yanceyville is a small town, but the veterans are very patriotic and active.  Learn more. Veterans are very special in small town America.
